Maui drivers watch gas prices reach $4 By JAYMES SONG, Associated Press Writer 16 minutes ago "Maui No Kai Oi" is a popular Hawaiian saying that means Maui is the best. Mike Sweeney recently moved to this idyllic island from Denver and was hit with the other side of living in paradise with his first visit to the gas pump: Maui is also No. 1 in gas prices. "After seeing the total, I won't be smiling," Sweeney said as he watched the numbers on the Chevron pump spin faster than a slot machine. The pump finally stopped at $97.20, which...

Maui erects Christmas tree to protect menorah [Which side the ACLU is really on.]
Posted by admin / Under Maui Travel
A Hawaii county erected a Christmas tree to protect a Chanukah menorah from a church-state separation challenge. The American Civil Liberties Union complained to Maui County this week after seeing the menorah, accompanied by a dreidel, in front of the county building. A local rabbi had asked authorities for permission to set up the menorah. The ACLU cited laws that say that displaying a religious symbol by itself could constitute endorsement of that religion. County workers scrambled Wednesday to find a Christmas tree, in short supply in Hawaii this late in the season. One was found at a local botanical...

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1, 2006 -- The Hawaii National Guard is planning to airlift supplies to isolated residents on Maui as soon as their needs are ascertained, a military official said from the states capital today. Local authorities are compiling supply needs lists from Maui residents, Hawaii National Guard spokesman Maj. Chuck Anthony said from Honolulu during a phone interview with American Forces Press Service. Items requested by Maui residents will likely range from fuel needed to power generators to food and other necessities, he said. A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Hawaiian Islands Oct. 15. No deaths were reported....

Hawaiian Temples Much Older Than Thought
Posted by admin / Under Maui Travel
Ancient Hawaiians started building their monumental temples at least three centuries earlier than previously thought, a new study suggests. They also spent more time building them, renovating and constructing new temples in waves depending on the island's political situation. "This research provides conclusive evidence that the Maui temple network grew and expanded over a period at least five centuries," said Michael Kolb, an anthropologist at Northern Illinois University and author of the study. "It's clear that the temple system evolved as part of a long trajectory of social and political change that also saw a shift from ancestral to sacrificial...

Maui May Be Running Out of Sand
Posted by admin / Under Maui Travel
WAILUKU, Hawaii - Maui may be running out of sand, threatening not only its famous year-round beaches but the state's booming construction industry. Sources of readily available sand may run out within five to seven years, according to a report being prepared for Maui County. The vast system of sand dunes from Waihee to Waikapu has largely been covered by development, and what's left is being mined, the report says. Maui sand is in high demand because it's a key ingredient in concrete and the only material now available for beach restoration projects. About 318,000 tons of sand are dug...

Neighbors seeking peace and quiet band together in 'frog squad'
Posted by admin / Under Maui Travel
MAKAWAO, HI) A group of neighbors in a rural Upcountry Maui community has banded together to rid their yards of annoying coqui frogs. "It's all about people power," said Adam Radford of the Maui Invasive Species Committee. "It's a waste of resources when you work up to a border and you can't go any farther. We'll never get on top of this without neighborhoods and personal responsibility." The invasive quarter-sized frogs subsist on the same diet of insects as native birds and are seen by many in the state including the Department of Land and Natural Resources as a...

Mayor has plan for all to be on same page(Maui)

WAILUKU Mayor Alan Arakawa will introduce a new long-range planning strategy for Maui County when he presents his administrations vision for the future in a State of the County speech on Wednesday. In an announcement of his annual talk to report on accomplishments and to present his goals, Arakawa said he will introduce a major new initiative: The Integrated Infrastructure Management Strategy. This is a common-sense if bureaucratic way of describing a system that will allow the right hand to know what the left hand is doing, he said. Weve all seen it happen: One agency comes along, rips...
